How to reach Rameshwaram from Delhi by train

Rameshwaram Temple is one of the most famous Shiva shrines in India. It is significant for Hindus as a pilgrimage to Banaras is incomplete without a Pilgrimage to Rameswaram. According to the legend, Rameswaram is the place from where Lord Rama, built a bridge across the sea to rescue his consort Sita from Ravana. This is also the place where Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to cleanse away the sin of killing Ravana. Both the Vaishnavites and Shaivites visit this pilgrimage which is known as the Varanasi of South. Rameswaram along with Dwarka, Puri and Badrinath form the four Char Dhams.

Sri Ramanathaswamy temple (Rameswaram Temple) is one of the most fascinating temples in entire India. This is renowned for its magnificent corridors and massive sculptured pillars. The third corridor of Ramanathaswamy temple is the longest one in the world.

The presiding deity here is in the form of a Linga with the name Sri Ramanathaswamy, it also happens to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. This temple stands as an epitome of Dravidian architectural style of the medieval ages. It is also an important port and helps in connecting India to other countries as well. Being a popular tourist spot, there are many attractions that can be explored during a visit to Rameshwaram. They are the Ramanathaswamy Temple, Pamban Bridge, Agni Tirtham, Adam’s Bridge, Pamban Island, etc.

The Rameshwaram railway station is directly connected via rail to all major stations of Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Thanjavur and Chennai. Major cities of Tamil Nadu are connected directly to Rameshwaram via railway networks. There are various types of trains that arrive and depart from the city such as superfast, express and mail trains.

There are no direct flights or trains or buses between New Delhi to Rameshwaram.The convenient and fastest way to reach from New Delhi to Rameshwaram is to take a flight from New Delhi to Madurai then take a cab or a taxi from Madurai to Rameshwaram. The cheapest way to reach Rameshwaram from New Delhi is to take Mas Duronto Exp from New Delhi to Chennai then take State transport bus from Chennai to Rameshwaram. The nearest railway station to Rameshwaram is the Rameshwaram Railway station. Trains to Rameshwaram leave from H Nizamuddin station, New Delhi station, Delhi Sarai Rohilla Station and Old Delhi station. The transit stations are MADURAI JN, DINDIGUL JN, CHENNAI EGMORE, TIRUCHCHIRAPALI, MANMAD JN, H SAHIB NANDED, VADODARA JN, KACHEGUDA, AHMEDABAD JN, SURAT and JALGAON JN.

If you prefer Rajdhani you have two options. Travel from New Delhi-Chennai and from Chennai change another train either to Rameshwaram or Kanyakumari and return also same way. You can also travel from New Delhi- Trivandrum Rajdhani and from Trivandrum kanyakumari is around 60 km cover Rameswaram by taxi or train while returning from Rameswaram, go to Chennai to catch return Rajdhani because from Rameswaram you do not have direct train to Trivandrum to catch Rajdhani.
